Fuel for Thought

For this project, students build off of the concepts in the Mathematical’s Reasoning Fuel for Thought Problem from 1st semester to create a new PBA that fits in with the Money Matters unit on automobile ownership in a way that meets student needs in this course. The Culminating Assessment asks students to collect data from their own (or a family member’s or a friend’s) gasoline consumption and miles driven for at least 2 weeks.  Students use that data to calculate and discuss various ways of analyzing the consumption such as mpg, g/100 miles, $/mile. As an extension it is possible to work in the emission standards such as grams/mile, although this information may not be easily accessible for the automobiles in question. After sharing their results with others, students reflect on the usefulness of each type of ratio and how/when they might apply this information in their own financial planning.
